Weree, Johnson

Johnson Weree, a refugee of Liberian origin has been living in The Netherlands for more than 10 years, with no settled home or address. He is spending most of his days in a public library, unstoppable drawing portraits and vehicles. Drawing-materials keep him alive. The heads of dozens of undetermined men and women are drawn streakily and lively, with characteristic hairstyles and peculiar partings. The heads rest on static busts dressed in schematic colourful textile designs, a remembrance of the African homeland fabrics. They seem to bring together Weree’s own past, present and future. His colourful memories of life in Africa, his current predicament as a refugee and his lifelong dream of starting all over as a fashion designer.
